Just back from Lake Murray and you can't see Mt. Miguel for the white smoke in the air. Does this mean it's extinguished right there?

Welcome Back Hounds! PTA Welcomes New Families
Parents and students waited anxiously for Principal Stern to open the gate and start the 2007-2008 school year at Phoebe Hearst Elementary. Teachers waited on the blacktop and met their new families and had warm hellos for old students. After school started, Principal Stern held an orientation session for new and returning parents and guardians in the Hearst Hound Auditorium at which PTA President Jeff Cotta (eastbay85@yahoo.com) provided an outline of the PTA’s mission for the year as did Hearst Foundation representative and Annual Auction Gala Co-Chairperson Michelle Gilmore.

Hearst PTA Throws An Ice Cream Social on Class List Day
The Friday before school starts (August, 31, 2007 this year) is always a day of great anticipation as the class lists are finalized and posted on the windows of the school office while parents and students meet to see “who got who” and “who is with who”. For new parents and students, it can be a bit overwhelming being in a sea of people who already know each other, so the Hearst PTA decided to make everyone feel a little more at home by designating a table in the Hearst Elementary lunch arbor for each class to allow students and parents to pre-meet any others who were there. The PTA also signed-up new members (Tracy Canepa TracyCanepa@cox.net), provided Hearst Directory entry and advertising information (James Brody jamesbrody@cox.net), eScript Fundraising signups (Linda Haedt lhaedt@cox.net), and opportunities to purchase and order the new 2007-2008 Hearst Hound Gear (Jeff Cotta eastbay85@yahoo.com). It looks like the start of a great new Hearst tradition!

Here's the Eventful calendar (the source calendar) widget that can be embedded in any website, like the Hearst Elementary website:
To save events to your own electronic calendar, click on an event and look for the Save To Calendar link, then select your own type of calendar.

To keep track of all the goings-on at :Hearst Elementary School in Del Cerro, San Diego, I've started an electronic, shareable, subscribeable Calendar for Hearst Elementary School - Del Cerro, San Diego. I'm initially using the Hearst Happenings periodic newsletter as the source for events, but I'd like to eventually turn this over to the sources of events at Hearst. I'm using the Eventful calendaring system to keep track of Hearst events, which provides features for subscribing to the calendar updates and events, downloading of events to your own calendar, including Outlook, Google Calendar, and others.
Here's the current events on the calendar....

Hearst Elementary Parties For The Room 7 Computer Lab Facelift
OK, so the big hoops and hollers weren't for the work on the Room 7 Computer Lab, I was happy with the progress made on the lab yesterday and was ready for a party myself (Thanks Mark S. for your help in that regard). The school's unofficial start of the year, the Fall Festival...in Western Round-up theme, provided lots of fun, games, and prizes (mostly of the disposable kind) to end the productive afternooon and week.

I started working with Mrs. Applbaum and Mr. Cox on a facelift to The Hearst Room 7 Computer Lab (click the link for Flickr photo set of the lab). The lab is against the northwest back wall of the room, bordered by the teacher's desk to the south, the sink to the north, and a storage / supplies area to the east (for you direction detailed oriented folks..hehe). With it not in use since last year ended, there were lots of extra things hanging out in the aisle, under the desks, and such, and a good dusting was needed (man...I wish I had a 'before' picture). So after a bit of planning on immediate goals (typing and math software tools and networked printing), I spent a good deal of the next two hours just clearing the aisles, getting towers under desks to make the most minimal of desk space available for mousing, and totally polluting the dust-sock with the layer of dirty dust covering most everything. It was a bit dirty, but it all came together about the best it could for that amount of time (and the space available). I then kicked off updates to the computers operating systems, started disk cleans and deframentations, and a minimal amount of validating the typing and math software on each machine...unfortunately these were left in various stages to get finished next week...so we can put this computer coral into use! We need to complete the system / disk updates and software validation on each machine, but hopefully that can get mopped up at the start of the week next week. A totally satisfying experience for me...great to be able to help with something I truly believe in and hope to learn and experience more in. I wrote up my own goal for the lab...
The technology hub of Hearst Elementary Room 7, our Computer Lab. The initial steps of a face lift started on October 20, 2005, with the goal of a providing a comfortable, space-efficient environment for Room 7 to use computers and Inter-networked technology to explore and express themselves and their world.
I've got lots of ideas and Mrs. Applbaum seems eager to try some New Things...maybe even a class blog...wow. We'll see where we can get to after this good start!
