Closing the interview and the show tonight with something from Charlie, again featuring Red Holloway on sax...love the way this one worked out...

...look forward to hearing more from these guys live and on record...get something out Charlie!!

And as Jean Bach signed off with me tonight...Night Night!!

Go Miff Mole...Freetime at 10:00!!
10:28:48 PM

Charlie chats (with Red Holloway at first in the background practicing "Salt Peanuts") about the 2/1/06 SD Museum of Art date, what he's up to in Cambria with neighbors Red and Ernie (Watts)...and then we are treated to a Live tune from Charlie on piano and Red playing Alto (according to ear-trained Ron Dhanifu)...what a treat! Closing with Charlie's URL and goodbyes...

Thanks Charlie and Red!!
10:26:17 PM

Getting this next interview segment started with something from Charlie's 2003 disc and a tune featuring is SD Museum of Art Jazz in the Park 2/1/06 Red Holloway...how was I to know that Red would be there when I called Charlie up...here goes...
10:23:08 PM

Ending the Jean Bach interview segment with another Monk tune...as Jean would enjoy it, I imagine...
10:20:57 PM

Jean chats about the DVD release of her documentary A Great Day In Harlem, the day itself, the footage from Milt Hinton's camera...in color, the other extras on the DVD, some special stories, and a brief thought on last year's passing of Bobby Short.

Thanks sooo much Jean!! Best of luck on the Gerry Mulligan footage, hopefully it will soon be out..or well baked as Jean metaphorically put it!
10:19:10 PM

I'm so glad I picked this to lead into the Jean Bach - A Great Day In Harlem interview...Jean seemed to like it and said that everyone back on the day in 1958 were smiling with Monk...I always smile when I hear Monk!
10:16:13 PM

Great title! And a nice groove indeed on this one...another spin next week is called for!
10:13:19 PM

Another Jazz classic, this time by Nat Adderly, from a great sounding new Big Band disc...love the spiritual feeling intro to this version...
10:10:43 PM

A lot of music from just the piano - drums duo...taking the familiar Jazz classic to new directions for sure...
10:07:31 PM

Nice sounding keys from the classical keyboardist, Joel A. Martin. We'll have to experiment a bit more with this one...
10:04:53 PM

Nice to get that latin groove back into it...interviews are great and swinging after the interviews is even greater!!
10:02:10 PM

L.Zaide wanted to speed this one up a bit...a bit more urgency to why you want to get home...if you know what I mean...

Great interview!!
9:58:31 PM

Chatting with the artist about the tunes, the concept of the album, his introduction to the standards he interprets on the New disc, his time in Vegas, and more...great chat L.Zaide!!
9:55:22 PM

Kicking off the interview segment with an artists suggested tune...I love this tune to start with...and the lyrics, as L.Zaide is about to reinforce...totally suggestive.

And I like the way it starts out moody and then gets wild!!
9:53:29 PM

Beautifully done classic made famous by Stan, but what would you expect from A Tribute to Stan Getz...nicely done Mark!
9:50:24 PM

Nice inventive, creative thing moving out of Hour 1 into our next phase, the introspective and further reaching Hour 2...thanks for getting us there Ivo!
9:47:54 PM

Hoo Ray!! A local San Diego Big Band Album!!!

Actually this one is both San Diego ensemble and Big Band...with Jazz 88's Cynthia Hammond on vocal on one of the tunes...cool!!!
9:41:18 PM

Some pretty interesting rhythms from the kind of standard piano-bass-drums trio...interesting composition also...
9:36:29 PM

This is an electric blues swinger! Right on!!
9:24:40 PM

Nice mid-tempo swinger from our 2005 Jazz Live guest...
9:22:16 PM

Nice Brazilian Thing, up tempo for Hour 1...drive away drivers....
9:19:18 PM

Right on...Jae's got another killer disc with this one...a great opener for the first set of the show!
9:15:40 PM

You go Steve...some folks don't dig you too much here, but I kinda like the gravelly Jazz voice thing...it's not the same sweet songbird Thing we are getting lots of these days...

...maybe something a bit more adventurous next time out?
9:13:02 PM

Kickin' off the show and Hour 1 with a little blues swinger...

lots of great things planned for tonight!!!
9:09:13 PM

Hamas...work with them if they work with us...please...the people have spoken...what have they said?
9:01:30 PM

Dedicating our last tune of the evening to the equiptment here...pretty unprofessional on my part I'll admit...frustration reigns...

Lots of fun tonight, even though....thanks to Ed for the interview!!

    NIGHT NIGHT....VO
    9:32:42 PM

This is a disc that is getting lots of plus and minus reviews...and lots of pre-press on the whole European Jazz Thing...we've got to get Esbjorn on this show!!

I will be posting what I know about this subject this week...
    9:30:29 PM

Nice sounding tune and performance...fit nicely in Hour 3...inventive...creative...yep...
    9:23:09 PM

Yep...an Hour 3 gem...and this disc has lots more where that came from...
    9:21:47 PM

"...an iron fist upside the mushy head of smooth jazz..."? It may be something New for Grant, but "iron fist"? That may be a bit much.

But it would be interesting to hear Grant's story on this...maybe his only 'real' Jazz station interview?
    9:19:52 PM

Nice sound to her voice...and a great arrangement too...
    9:17:22 PM

Great freakin' wild thing to open up Hour 3 with...and boy do I need wild because I'm feeling wild and PO'd....I just discovered that in my haste to make the interview with Ed happen in another booth because of the unreliable equiptment (not so recently, I must admit, but...), I did not get my CD recording started...CD in the recorder, Record just not pushed...damn...

...back to this wild tune...most excellent James!!!
    9:14:12 PM

Coming out of the interview with NEA Jazz Master Bob Brookmeyer...he would be a great interview...especially now with his new honors and new re-issue...
    9:10:09 PM

Ed and I (finally!!!) chat about Jazz record labels, small vs. big, impact for listeners of multiple channels of Jazz, independent labels and artists vs. the bigs, his thoughts on highlights from the IAJE 2006 conference, and what's up next in JazzWeek.

Thanks Ed....sorry for no recording on my end...at least the interview happened!!
    9:07:52 PM

    Fire-y, like Charo...cuchi cuchi....
    9:05:05 PM

Swinging into our interview session (Note: I know now that this did not come off at this time and the scramble with busted equiptment begins...)
    9:02:08 PM

Love this tune...nice cover L....nice cover art L....
    8:57:40 PM

Hour 2 begins introspectively...great flute sound from this New artist!!

    Pronounced Rie-Toe...Thanks Joe!!
    8:48:37 PM

From a classic reissue...this one is a mid-tempo tune from a Moodsville release from 1960...great sound to this band...
    8:38:10 PM

Nice sounding Big Band...and LIVE no less!!
    8:35:30 PM

A second Gershwin tune in Hour 1...already...

...and this one sounds so unique...
    8:34:08 PM

Nice horn arrangement...blowing some kind of mainstream shit...I warned you...I'm pissed still...and it's not Pascal's fault...
    8:31:20 PM

    Cool groove...

Mark in the USD area of SD, 20 yr Jazz 88 listener, digging Lazy Bird...
    8:25:58 PM

Swinging New to end Set 1...go Alex!
    8:24:02 PM

Great New LIVE disc...Carmen is oh so soulful on this...with stud players all around!!
    8:17:15 PM

A great, up-tempo way to kick off the show and Hour 1...

Note: I'm posting this during Hour 3 and despite the wild and carefree blowing of James Carter to kick off Hour 3, I'm sooooooooo pissed at the turn of events for my interview with Ed Trefzger...no fault of his...but engineering failed and in the process of us running around the studio trying (and eventually succeeding) to make the interview come off...I was not able to get a New CD in the recorder and pushed...so not interview recorded and no audio...damn...

    onward...
    8:14:52 PM

    10:13:26 PM

    10:09:47 PM

...a Benny Golson tuned specifically to end with...and what a great arrangement and work by the whole band together...thanks for the suggestion and the interview Julius!!
    10:07:13 PM

...more chat...about the band on this disc...his working quartet...with teacher Steve Davis and his Jam Man Jeremy Pelt!! The Jam Session in NY and work elsewhere...hope to hear more!!!

    ...like another tune...to end...
    10:05:24 PM

Julius scoring some major points with this tune choice...a tune he wrote for his wife Michelle...you've got me to thank 'Shell....
    10:02:42 PM

Leading off with his influences, as he does on the New liner notes...Jackie McLean mentioned....what he's trying to add...Illinois Jacquet...and more from the New....
